What we can learn from In N Out
My fiance and I were at In N Out Burger the other night marveling about the business' spectacular strategy. Their menu is simple which keeps their costs down. That's why their prices are so low. Because they don't offer a bunch of different kinds of burgers they don't have to carry many many ingredients "just in case" like other chains do. The have no need for bacon, avocado, mushrooms, etc. They just carry the basics. And as far as fast food goes, they are the healthiest. I know so many people who would rather starve then eat fast food, but they will eat In N Out. According to Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, they are the only hamburger chain that doesn't put rat tails in their hamburger meat.
I have never seen a commercial or a print ad for In N Out. They don't advertise. They've realized that they don't have to. The burgers are delicious, their prices are low, their burgers are somewhat "healthy." They don't waste their money on advertising.
In N Out has the best employees of any fast food chain because they are paid well. They aren't paid minimum wage like the rest. They start at 9 or 10 per hour if I remember correctly and they have benefits, even for part-timers. You can tell that they like their jobs because they are always friendly. I have never come across a rude or grumpy In N Out employee. In N Out has great lessons to be learned by the rest of us.
